Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a powerful, evidence-based treatment that has transformed the lives of countless individuals grappling with trauma and other distressing life experiences. At Compass of Hope Counseling, with locations in Concord, Hooksett, and Hampton, New Hampshire, as well as via online telehealth for New Hampshire and Maine, we specialize in EMDR therapy as part of our comprehensive approach to mental wellness. Our expert therapists are here to guide you through the healing process, helping you to find peace and move forward with resilience.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy is designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. Through a structured eight-phase treatment process, EMDR helps to reduce the emotional impact of past experiences that are at the root of dysfunction. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on the emotional response to a traumatic event rather than the event itself, facilitating the brain's natural healing process.

How EMDR Works

The unique aspect of EMDR therapy involves bilateral stimulation and taxing the working memory, guided by a trained therapist. This process is believed to activate the brain's information processing system, allowing traumatic memories to be reprocessed and integrated in a more adaptive way.

The Eight Phases of EMDR Therapy Include:

1. History and Treatment Planning

Explore past experiences and present symptoms

2. Preparation

Teaching stress reduction and coping strategies to increase tolerance

3. Assessment

Deciding together what memories and negative beliefs you want to change

4. Desensitization

Reducing emotions associated with traumatic memories

5. Installation

Strengthening a positive belief about yourself

6. Body Scan

Scanning the body for residual disturbance in the form of body sensations

7. Closure

Returning to equilibrium after each session.

8. Reevaluation

At beginning of each session, reassess to ensure distress is still low

Who Can Benefit from EMDR?

EMDR therapy is effective for a wide range of psychological issues, including but not limited to:

PTSD and trauma

Anxiety and panic attacks

Depression

Stress

Phobias
